Passover Week-Pesach, Day 1

Today we look at Pesach, day 1. Pesach is the Jewish term for the Passover festival. Last evening, April 8th on the civil calendar and Nissan 14 on the Hebrew calendar was called Erev Pesach. Erev means the day before a Jewish holiday or Sabbath. Therefore, Erev Pesach means the day before Passover. The Passover Seder meal was to be observed last evening in accordance with Exodus 12:6-10.

6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to slaughter it [b]at twilight. Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel [above the door] of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the meat that same night, roasted in fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted in fire—both its head and its legs, along with its inner parts. 10 You shall let none of the meat remain until the morning, and anything that remains left over until morning, you shall burn completely in the fire. ” Exodus 12:6-10 (AMP)

Pesach/Passover Daily Readings

Pesach day 1 scripture
Pesach day 1 Scripture

Scripture readings are selected from the Torah, (The first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures) and the Haftara,(A passage selected from the Prophets). The Jewish believers in Christ also add portions from the Brit Chadashah (New Testament) to the daily readings. I have added the (NLT) links to the Scripture readings below.

When reading the above scriptures, I love the fact that as we learned yesterday, the Festivals of God are dress rehearsals for future fulfillment by Jesus Christ. We see that fulfillment in the Brit Chadashah (New Testament).

Chronology of Jesus’ Final Week

Because of the difference in calendars used, dates can be difficult to decipher. Moreover, when reading the explanations of how to calculate when a particular event is to start and other rules and regulations added by the Priests and Rabbi’s it can really get confusing. Oy Veh!

However, I have learned much from the Hebrew4Christians website. I highly recommend them! Included below are screenshots explaining the dating of the death, burial, and resurrection. I hope you will find it helpful!

We have been taught that Jesus was crucified on Friday on the civil calendar. He had to be buried before the Sabbath which we think of as Saturday. Then Jesus was resurrected early Sunday morning. However, that is based on our calendar. We must keep in mind that God’s calendar is different.

It helps when we read and understand Scripture through the eyes of those it was originally written to. Once we begin to understand the difference we can see why there is much disagreement and misunderstanding.

The Bottom Line

Whatever the dates were exactly the bottom line is: Jesus died for mankind to pay our debt and was resurrected. And so shall we all be resurrected. The question is where will you spend eternity?

Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.” Romans 8:34 (NLT)

The Hope of the Resurrection

13 And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.”

15 We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. 18 So encourage each other with these words.”1Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NLT)

Be Encouraged! The Lord’s return is closer than ever!
