28 Awesome “I AM” Quotes of Jesus Our Savior

Today, I have gathered 28 Awesome “I Am” quotes of Jesus our Savior to share with you. The God of all creation alone gives us hope. Jesus the Christ (Messiah) never said “I used to be.” Moreover, Jesus never declared that “He will be something else” in the future.

What He did declare is “I AM”. All creation exists because of Jesus Christ the only “I AM” that ever was, is, and will be!

God first declares this name for Himself in Exodus, when He appeared to Moses in the burning bush.

“Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them? And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”- Exodus 3:13-14

Before Abraham Was, I AM

The Israelites at that time and practicing Jews of today revere the name of God (“I AM”) as a precious title that was not to be slandered or given to anyone or anything other than God himself.

However, Jesus also claimed the title of “I AM”. This was blasphemy in the eyes of the religious leaders. Whenever Jesus made an “I AM” statement in which He claimed attributes of deity, He was identifying Himself as God.

The Gospel of John states one day when the Pharisees once again were questioning the power, authority, and teaching of Jesus, they accused Him of being demon-possessed due to His claims. Jesus responds:

“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Jn 8:56-58

Before Abraham was, I AM.”

Jesus of Nazareth – Jn 8:58

The Garden of Gethsemane

Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees came to The Garden of Gethsemane with lanterns, torches, and weapons to arrest Jesus. When Jesus asked who it was they were looking for they replied “Jesus of Nazareth” When He replied “I AM He” those who came to arrest Him drew back and fell to the ground. – (Jn 18:4–5)

I AM HE

Jesus of Nazareth – John 18:5

Such is the power of our Creator! No one can stand when presented with the power and authority of God Himself. The Great “I AM”

9 “I AM” Quotes from the Gospel of John

Jesus knew that people often learned best when they are able to move from what is known (familiar) to what is unknown (unfamiliar). By using metaphors Jesus showed that He was the master teacher by using comparisons and contrasts of things that were familiar to His audience. He made the complex simple and easy to understand.1

#1 – “I AM the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” – Jn 6:35

#2 – “I AM the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life. – Jn 8:12

I AM the light

Excerpt from the Jewish New Testament Commentary:

The Mishna, states that at the Temple “there were four golden menorahs with four golden bowls at the top of each, and four ladders each leading to a bowl. Four strong young cohanim would climb up with pitchers each holding 9 liters of oil which they would pour into the bowls.

From the worn-out drawers and girdles of the cohanim they made wicks, and with them, they lit the menorahs, and there was not a courtyard in Jerusalem that was not lit up by the light of the Beit-HaSho’evah.

Pious men and men of good deeds would dance around [the menorahs] with lit torches in their hands, singing songs and praises, while the Levites played harps, lyres, cymbals, trumpets and innumerable other musical instruments….” (Sukkah 5:2-4)

The Gemara, a collection of scholarly discussions on Jewish law dating from around 200 to 500AD stated the menorahs were 75 feet high (Sukkah 52b).

I AM the Door

#3 – “Most assuredly, I say to you, I AM the door of the sheep.” – Jn 10:7

In towns, sheep from many flocks were kept for the night in a common sheepfold, overseen by one “doorkeeper” who regulated which shepherds brought and took which sheep.

A “field” sheep pen was an enclosure for sheep with only one entrance. It might be a cave, a stone or mud-brick structure, and it might or might not have a roof.

#4 – “I AM the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” – Jn 10:9

I AM the door

The shepherd actually laid his body across the entrance, to keep the sheep in and to keep out the wolves. The shepherd was in fact the door.

I AM the Good Shepherd

#5 – “I AM the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” – Jn 10:11

The bad shepherd thinks the flock exists for his benefit, but the good shepherd lives (and dies) for the good of the sheep.

#6 – “I AM the good shepherd, and I know My sheep and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so, I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.” – Jn 10:14-15

  • The good shepherd sacrifices for the sheep
  • The good shepherd knows his sheep
  • The good shepherd is known by the sheep

#7 – “I AM the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. – Jn 15:5

I AM the Ressurection

#8 – “I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.– Jn 11:25

With this statement, Jesus overthrows everything thing we know about the law of entropy and the way things work in this world. For ages, death has ruled over men like a tyrant.

However, Jesus is the champion over death. While the ancients feared death, the Christians can only fear dying. The believer will never die, but simply make an instant transition from an old life to a new life.

I AM the Truth

#9 – “I AM the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” – Jn 14:6

Excerpt from the Jewish New Testament Commentary: Messianic Judaism and Christianity, which accept this teaching, are indeed in a sense exclusive, for they deny that there are other men, other religious leaders, who have come from God and paid the death penalty for mankind’s sins.

In this sense, then, Yeshua (Jesus) is the way; and it is not true that “on the mountaintop, all paths meet,” for only Yeshua’s path arrives there.

Nevertheless, this exclusivity is tempered by three factors:

  1. The path is open to everyone (Rom 10:9-13).
  2. Yeshua’s path sets no precondition except turning from sin to the one true God.
    • In particular, it does not require Gentiles to stop being Gentiles or Jews to stop being Jews.
  3. It is God’s one true path; it exists.

This simply means that, rather than complaining about exclusivity, one should be profoundly grateful to God for providing a way out of the sinful condition that besets every human being.

True exclusivity would be either God’s providing no path whatsoever, instead of one which suffices for all or providing it for some but not for everyone.

To want some way other than that which God has offered is simply to want to play God, to design one’s own remedy for sin, and ultimately not to take the evil of sin seriously. (on the New Testament’s remedy for sin, see (Rom 5:12-21).

The positive message of this verse is available to everyone. Yeshua is the Way by which everyone comes to the Father: His work and His very person both show us and give us all we need to be in a right personal relationship with God.

More than that, He is not merely a way, a path, but the goal itself-Truth and eternal Life.

5 “I AM” Proclamations of Jesus from the Gospels

How my spirit is refreshed when I read the following:

#1 – “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Mat 11:29

#2 – “Where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” – Mat 18:20

#3 – “… lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” –  Mat 28:20

#4 – Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him: “I am willing; be cleansed.” – Mar 1:41

#5 – “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” – Jn 17:16

12 “I AM” Quotes of Jesus Our Returning King

in the twinkling

The following quotes are from the book of Revelation. Satan was defeated at the Cross on Calvary. Jesus, the Great I AM the Conquering King is returning soon. Are you ready?

I Am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I AM alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”

Jesus of Nazareth – Rev 1:18

Jesus is the First and the Last, the God of all eternity, Lord of eternity past and eternity future. The victory that Jesus won over sin and death was a permanent victory. He didn’t rise from the dead just to die again.

Moreover, some imagine that the devil is somehow the “lord of Hell” and the devil has authority or power to determine life or death.

Clearly, they are wrong, for only Jesus holds the keys of Hades and of Death. We can trust that Jesus never lets the devil borrow the keys.

“Behold, I am coming as a thief.”

Jesus of Nazareth Rev 16:15

I Am Coming To You Quickly

In the book of Revelation Jesus states 5 different times that He is coming quickly. The expression ‘quickly’ does not necessarily mean immediate.  It also is to be understood as something which is sudden and unexpected.

  1. “Repent; or else I AM coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.” – Rev 2:16
  2. “Behold, I AM coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.” – Rev 3:11
  3. “Behold, I AM coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” – Rev 22:7
  4. “And behold, I AM coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.” – Rev 22:12
  5. “He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I AM coming quickly.” – Rev 22:20

Alpha and Omega

Likewise, we see that Jesus was crystal clear leaving no doubt concerning who He is. Alpha and Omega, are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. God in Christ comprises all that goes between, as well as the first and last.

  1. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” – Rev 1:8
  2. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, and, what you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia.” – Rev 1:11
  3. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” – Rev 22:13
  4. “And He said to me, “It is done I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.” – Rev 21:6

I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”

Jesus of Nazareth Rev 22:16

In Closing

Theologian C. S. Lewis in Mere Christianity stated:

I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.

That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell.

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call Him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher.

He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
