Be Encouraged! There is Hope!

In a previous post, I asked the question “should we be fearful?” Looking at the list of signs Jesus shared in Matthew 24, and the behavior of many in the last days from 2 Timothy 3, it appears that everything is happening at the same time. But the topic everyone appears to be panicking over is the Coronavirus. It reminds me of the 1938 radio broadcast, The War of the Worlds by H.G.Wells. However, I want you to be encouraged! There is Hope in the midst of all the panic. God is in control!

Plagues and Pestilence

When I was recently married with a 2-year-old son living in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, two different incidents happened that terrified me as a young wife. The first was an outbreak that became named the Legionnaires Disease. The other event was the 3 Mile Island Meltdown Accident. Both caused this young wife and new mother to freak out!

The disease is named after the outbreak where it was first identified. It was located at a 1976 American Legion convention in Philadelphia. This was only a two-hour drive from my home in Harrisburg Pa. Among the more than 2,000 attendees of an American Legion convention held at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel, 182 attendees contracted the disease and 29 of them died.

Legionnaires Disease

Wikipedia states: the bacteria are found naturally in freshwater. However, sources, where temperatures allow the bacteria to thrive, include hot water tanks, cooling towers, and evaporative condensers of large air conditioning systems, such as those commonly found in hotels and large office buildings. It was claimed to spread by breathing in a mist that contains the bacteria.

An estimated 8,000–18,000 cases a year in the United States require hospitalization. No vaccine is available. Antibiotics are used to treat those with the disease. However, exposure to Legionnaires’ disease is higher for those in the hospital than those in the general public. It’s no wonder my doctor told me she didn’t want me to stay in the hospital any longer than necessary after a surgical procedure.

The fatality rate of Legionnaires’ disease has ranged from 5–30% during various outbreaks and approaches 50% for hospital-acquired infections, especially when treatment with antibiotics is delayed.

While all of this was taking place I was working in a cafeteria in the Capitol complex. All the hysteria among the government employees did not help alleviate my fears. I was petrified that my husband, child and myself were at death’s door! Although I was saved at age 11, I was not following the Lord in 1976. Moreover, I did not know the precious promises contained in His word that I could rely on to see me through this situation.

3 Mile Island Meltdown Accident

Then came the 3 Mile Island Meltdown Accident. Oh, joy! Not!

Per Wikipedia: The Three Mile Island accident was a partial meltdown of reactor number 2, near Harrisburg Pa, and subsequent radiation leak that occurred on March 28, 1979. It was the most significant accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant history. On the seven-point International Nuclear Event Scale. The incident was rated a five as an “accident with wider consequences”. The partial meltdown resulted in the release of radioactive gases and radioactive iodine into the environment.

Twenty-eight hours after the accident began, there were conflicting statements about radioactivity releases. Therefore, schools were closed and residents were urged to stay indoors. Farmers were told to keep their animals under cover and on stored feed.

Governor Dick Thornburgh, on the advice of NRC chairman, advised the evacuation “of pregnant women and pre-school age children…within a five-mile radius of the Three Mile Island facility.” The evacuation zone was extended to a 20-mile radius on Friday, March 30. Within days, 140,000 people had left the area.

My family lived 3.6 miles away in Middletown, PA

At this time we were living across the river from the plant in a mobile home. My son was 3 years old and we were both at home when this happened. Needless to say, as soon as my husband came home we packed up and headed to his brother’s home located north of Harrisburg. Once again I was panicked at what would happen. I was ready to get out of Dodge! It didn’t take me long to convince my husband to move to Kentucky.

I Understand Fear and Panic

I share these stories so you know that I understand fear and panic. However, I who proclaimed to know God really had no idea of how much He cared about my fear and panic. I didn’t understand that He was in control of everything that was happening and I could trust Him with my life. Moreover, if it came to it, even with my death.

Now I do understand and I want you to also understand that there is no need to fear what will happen in our lives as the Lord is preparing His return. As long as you have the assurance of where you will spend eternity, there is no reason to fear. So please Be Encouraged! God remains always in control, so we have no need to be out of control!

Philippians 4:6
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. New Living Translation (NLT)

Matthew 6:25-34
[ The Cure for Anxiety ] “Therefore I tell you, stop being worried or anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, as to what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow [seed] nor reap [the harvest] nor gather [the crops] into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by worrying can add one hour to [the length of] his life? Amplified Bible (AMP)

  1. Carmel McNeese says:

Yes, I agree, Bonnie! It’s when our faith is tested and we realize that our lives are totally dependent on Him, that we realize how much He truly loves us. I, like you, can look back and see how God’s handprints were all over the trials of my past, and, definitely my present! He cares about every detail, regardless of how small. He is a faithful God, and desires our total trust and faith in Him.

Thanks, Carmel for sharing such encouragement. I did not always enjoy what I went through in my life, but I would not change anything because God used those incidents to mold me into the woman I am today. He truly is an Awesome Father!

I would enjoy hearing your thoughts!
