In our study of oppression, we have learned that oppression is not depression (read more here). Moreover, we learned about the seven levels of oppression (read more here). However, we have been given powerful weapons and a winning strategy to pull down fortresses built by the devil. In this post, we will learn what they are and how to overcome and conquer oppression. We can abolish, dismantle, disassemble, and demolish oppression from our lives.
The word “oppression” originates from a Latin term which means to press upon or to press against. A person who is oppressed feels something pressing on him from the outside. Oppression does not come from the inside; it comes from the outside. A person who is oppressed feels Moreover, it is a spiritual force from the devil overpowering him.
There Is Hope
If you are a person who is oppressed, most likely you are feeling overpowered by your mind and emotions. Satan the devil (father of Lies) is literally ruling over you. He has found a foothold into your mind, emotions, and imagination and has built a stronghold there. Therefore, like a wicked king or tyrant, the devil is trying to dominate and control your life. All from the stronghold, he has established in your mind. However, there is hope through Jesus Christ.
Weapons To Demolish Oppression
2Corinthians 10:4 is an awesome verse where the apostle Paul begins to explain how to demolish oppression. It states:
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds,” – 2 Corinthians 10:4 MEV
Then Paul, thinking of a Roman soldier’s weapons used that analogy to help us understand our weapons given to us by the Spirit of God. Ephesians 6:14-20 states:
Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers…” – Ephesians 6:14-20 (NLT)
Per the Scripture above, we find the full weaponry given to us by the Spirit of God. The weapons are available for any believer to access and use against the oppression of the enemy.
God has supplied everything we need. His Word tells us how to overcome and conquer oppression, the most used scheme of the devil.

Understanding the Greek Meanings
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds,” 2 Corinthians 10:4 MEV
“Warfare”, “Carnal”, and “Mighty” in the Greek
“Warfare” is the Greek word strateia, which describes a well-planned strategic attack. It is from the Greek word streateuomai, which depicts strategic warfare, including a line of attack, methods to be used in the attack, and the route chosen to carry out the debilitating assault.
“Carnal” is the Greek word sarkikos meaning:
- Having the nature of flesh, i.e. under the control of the animal appetites
- governed by mere human nature, not by the Spirit of God
- having its seat in or aroused by the animal nature
- human: with the included idea of depravity
Therefore, we see that our weapons are not natural. Moreover, our weapons are not manmade. They are supernatural, divine, spiritual weapons. Hence, they are mighty!
“Mighty” is the Greek word dunatos, which is from the word dunamis. It describes something explosive. It’s superhuman power that comes with enormous energy and produces phenomenal, extraordinary, unparalleled results. It is the same Greek word that describes the full might of an advancing army, which means when these weapons are working, it is like an army’s power has been released to drive back the darkness that has tried to attack your mind. WOW!!!
This means when the weapons and the power of God are working in us, we no longer need to hide from the enemy! We can both confront the stronghold and pull it down. We can know how to overcome and conquer oppression!
“Pulling down”, and “Stronghold” in the Greek
“Pulling down” is the Greek word kathairesis meaning to take down; to disassemble, if needed, bit by bit.
“Stronghold” is ochuroma and it describes a castle, prison, or a fortress. The Greek word pictures a stronghold with walls fortified to keep outsiders out. Moreover, it also depicts a dreadful prison constructed deep inside a fortress that was intended to prevent a hostage or prisoner from escaping.
We Actually Empower the Oppression
Because we have believed the lies, it has empowered the lies to become a reality. When we embrace the lie the devil has been pounding into our thoughts, The devil, like a tyrant, moves into the lie (fortress/stronghold) that he has built. It is a well-defended lie that we have heard for so long, we really believe it.
The lie becomes a fortress, a prison. The walls are thick and we have been restrained by them for a long time. Unfortunately, when others try to help us, they cannot seem to penetrate the walls. Consequently, we have been taken hostage and are imprisoned inside the walls of a well-defended lie in your head. Hence, it’s a stronghold.
The Remedy to be Set Free of Oppression
Paul told the Corinthian Church how to overcome and conquer oppression! The first part of 2 Corinthians 10:5 states:
“Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God…,”
A Little More Greek Understanding
- “Casting down” is a translation of the same Greek word used for “pulling down” in verse 4.
- “Imagination” is logismos and is where we get logical thinking. It denotes the thoughts and emotions operating in the mind.
- “High thing” is from a Greek word hypsōma describing any kind of barrier or any presumptuous thought.
- “Exalts itself ” is from epairō describing something haughty; something arrogant; something which, in pride, lifts itself up.
The devil knows that the mind is the central control center of your life, and whoever controls your mind controls you. That is why God wants your mind! That’s the reason we need to renew our minds with the Word of God (see Romans 12:2). God wants your mind because when God has your mind, He has you.
An All-Out War Against the Knowledge of God
There is a Greek phrase for “against the knowledge of God” that is a combination of several different words: “enántia sti gnósi tou Theoú.” It depicts an all-out war against the knowledge of God.
Consider the following example below.
- God says you are healed. This is the knowledge of God.
- Your flesh says you are not healed and you will never be healed.
- God also says you are perfect in Christ.
- Your flesh will say you are a failure and that you’re never going to be anything in life.
Any mind and imagination that has been penetrated by the enemy, will exalt itself against whatever God says about you. God speaks the truth; oppression says the opposite. It is an all-out war against whatever God has declared about you!
What God has said about you is the truth. If you want to be set free, you have to make a decision. Whatever oppression or stronghold or vain imagination is working in your head, you must decide to commit an all-out war against that lie!
Bring Every Thought Captive
Paul continues to teach the Corinthian Church in the second half of 2 Corinthians 10:5 how to overcome and conquer oppression by:
“bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,” — 2 Corinthians 10:5
“Obedience” is the Greek word hupakoe. It depicts one who is submitted; one who listens willingly or by force; one who obeys what he hears, either willingly or by compulsion, duress, or pressure.
To destroy strongholds, we must speak to our minds and emotions. In other words, we need to submit ourselves to the Word of God. It’s up to each person to decide who they will listen to. God your Creator will never force you into submission. He allows us to make our own decisions. It’s called free will.
What Will it Be?
We must choose which voice we will listen to. We can either listen to the lie or listen to the truth. Whatever voice we listen to is the one we will believe, and the voice we believe is the one that will become our reality.
- Will you decide to hear what God has to say about you?
- Moreover, will you reach out in faith to obey and put into practice everything God says about you?
- Will you take a stand against the schemes of our enemy Satan, the father of lies?
Make the choice to put into action what God says and not what you feel or the lie you have believed! Find the scriptures you need and take a stand against the devil. Read or speak the Truth OUT LOUD when you hear the lies.
The devil can place things in your mind but he can not read your mind. This is why we need to speak God’s truth OUT LOUD.
You are telling Satan NO MORE of his lies. Once he is convinced that you mean business he will leave you. This is also the process of renewing your mind and emotions by submitting to Christ and His Word rather than to the lies. This is what is meant by “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ and the knowledge of God.”
We Can Be Free!
We must make the choice to hear the truth and believe it. The truth becomes our reality and obliterates the lie. We can walk free of every oppressive thought if we are willing to listen to the Word of God and take every thought captive. I am living proof of battles won! This is how to Overcome and conquer oppression.
Just think about it…
James 4:7 – “Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.“
